How to Get Skunk Smell off Your Dog

Skunks are commonly found in the United States of America and your dogs can often encounter one. The ultimate consequence of this encounter is, your dog ending up stinking. So, if you are wondering how you can get rid of this skunk smell, follow the steps mentioned below;

Don’t bring it inside

It is advisable to keep your pup or dog outside until the smell is gone. Letting it in will carry the smell inside the house. So, keep it outside and check its eyes whether they are red or not. If yes then flush them with cool water because it is a sign of irritation. It happens when dogs get sprayed by skunks in the face.

Prepare the Solution

The next step is to prepare a solution that will eliminate the smell instantly. To make this solution you need;

  • ¼ cup of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap or detergent
  • 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution

Mix all these ingredients in a bucket and apply the mixture immediately. Rub the foaming mixture well into the coat and let it stay for five minutes. Do not exceed the mentioned time limit because hydrogen peroxide if left on the fur for too long can cause bleaching. After 5 minutes, rinse the mixture with warm water.

Use Dog Shampoo

After rinsing the mixture, apply a dog shampoo and wash your dog thoroughly. It will eliminate the skunk stink and your pet will smell good.

Tip: Apply shampoo and the mixture with rubber gloves.

Dry it up

In the end, dry your dog with the help of a towel and keep it in a sunny and warm room. Make sure it does not feel cold otherwise it can get sick.

Some Important Precautions

  • First of all, save the eyes of a dog from the odor removing solution because it is dangerous for its sensitive eyes.
  • Do not use more than 3% of hydrogen peroxide because it can cause burns on the dog’s
  • Make the solution when needed and don’t store it. Otherwise it can explode in the storage bottle.
  • Do not let the skunk oil saturate into the hair. Wash your dog as soon as possible.
